RealNZ - Stewart Island / Rākiura
Stewart Island is NZ’s third-largest island and home to some of the most amazing experiences to be found in the South. Off the well-trodden tourist track, with limited accessibility (by water only), those who make the time to travel to Stewart Island are rewarded with some of the most pristine and pure nature to be found in Aotearoa. The 1hr ferry across the Foveaux Strait, separating the island from the South Island, allows time to spot plenty of stunning seabirds. On the island itself, the Stewart Island kiwi, or tokoeka, is found. The nocturnal, flightless, endangered bird is the largest kiwi in NZ and the country’s national bird. The island is also a trampers paradise, with trails all over the island, ranging from easy day trips, to the Great Walk and island circuit. Just off the coast, is Ulva Island, a pest and predator-free sanctuary, where native birdlife and plants have begun to thrive. Visitors marvel and the unspoiled forest and have the chance to meet native creatures, like robins, saddlebacks and yellowheads. Stewart Island, or Rākiura, in Māori, means “the land of glowing skies”; it’s as far south as you can go in NZ and where you can see the Aurora Australis, Southern Lights. With minimal light pollution on the island there is also an incredible view of the stars.
